To be honest, the biggest barrier is the human need for sleep. I used to pull shifts in Engineering before we lost half the flight crew in a single jump.

Right now we have a lot more part-timers than official department members and that's a bit of a problem.

I understand. Too few hands build walls that crumble. I'd be happy to join you--officially.

And I don't need to sleep, technically. Even if we're designed to feel like we should.

A year ago that would have been creepifying to hear.

Now it just sounds useful.

Sleeping is good, though, isn't it? Humans can't dream when they're awake; that to me is your biggest design flaw.

Lotsa nice things about sleep. Even if dreams depend on what they're about.

But it makes scheduling a bit tricky.

It's a simple thing to learn to control them. Once you know it's only a dream, you should be able to manipulate it.

Carolyn--she was the chief flight officer before, right? Do you have any stories of her?

She was. I worked with her for a year, all sorts of stories about demons and shuttle repairs.

Demons?

Yeah, some of the passengers have... interesting baggage with them.
