Canon: Firefly
Original or Alternate Universe: OU
Canon Point: Post-series, pre-movie (aka not on the end of a harpoon)
Number: Random!
Setting: The Firefly 'Verse (See, this time it's not long and complicated, just cancelled and incomplete!)
History: Wash was born on one of the Core colonies. The planet was heavily polluted and Wash longed for more open space. Not to mention seeing those star things people were always going on about. In order to attain these dreams, Wash decided to enter flight school. At some point, mostly likely to pay for tuition, Wash took a job at a fried food establishment. He was spectacularly bad at it and got himself fired.
While in flight school, he met a man who preferred to be addressed as Mr Universe. The two became friends, which would prove beneficial in the future (and doomy, but this is pre-Serenity Wash, so LALALA). Wash ultimately graduated second in his class, behind Mr Universe, who most likely hacked his grades.
During the Unification War, Wash’s skills naturally attracted the attention of the Alliance. However, he wasn’t comfortable with that idea, and sought out work in the civilian sector. Or at least he thought he did. It turned out that the civilian courier company he was working for had ties to the Independents. This led to him being shot down on his first outing, and spending the remainder of the war in a prisoner of war camp. While incarcerated, he entertained his fellow prisoners with shadow puppets.
After the war ended, Wash managed to find actual civilian work on the border worlds. Civilian, but not necessarily entirely legal. He moved from ship to ship, always looking for a crew where he really felt comfortable and earning glowing recommendations from every employer. Eventually he found a comfortable home on an aught three Firefly called
Serenity. Part of the appeal came from the highly attractive first mate. Unfortunately, she didn’t like him.
Well, at least not at first. Eventually
something happened to convince Zoe of his many fine qualities. Probably his persistent charms. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled so there aren't a lot of details on that front.
The pair opted to keep their relationship concealed from the captain, knowing full well that he was going to totally flip when he found out. Fortunately, Mal had zero conception of the fact that Zoe was in fact a woman and not Chewbacca, and they were able to conceal their relationship for quite some time. Eventually they did find out, though who knows whether that was before or after they married. We do know Mal wasn't at the wedding. If I were to speculate, that would be because they didn't tell him about it.
As if their lives weren’t complicated enough being not always successful smugglers, Serenity wound up picking up the Tam siblings, who are among the most wanted people in the Alliance. This led to many a zany adventure, close call and stunning display of piloting skill on Wash’s part. Wash continued to butt heads with Mal over Zoe through the course of this. Mundane things like insufficient vacation time and deadly serious things like Mal wanting Wash up on the bridge when Zoe was injured. That said, he still rigged up the big red button so Mal would be able to call everyone home when the miracle repairs for Serenity arrived.
Conflict with Mal came to a head when Zoe used Mal to cover her own lack of confidence in Wash’s notions for the loot from a successful heist. In a stunningly mature move, Wash tampered with the launch controls so they couldn’t leave for the job without his interference. The argument ended with Wash going on what should have been a simple job in Zoe’s place. On this job, Wash learned about carrying and scary. Mal and Wash got snatched by men working for Adelai Niska, who was angry about them backing out on a job earlier and kicking his lieutenant into the engine.
Naturally, Mal and Wash opted to spend their torture time arguing about Zoe. This was most likely an effort by Mal to keep Wash conscious. This is how Wash learned that Zoe married him in violation of orders. Zoe arrived to buy them back. Niska, being a sadistic villain, attempted to force her into a sadistic villain choice by only allowing one. Zoe wasn’t going to have any of that nonsense, and chose Wash before Niska was able to finish his villain speech. As soon as they made it back to Serenity, Wash decided they had to go rescue Mal. After the successful mission, Wash was rewarded with wife soup, as he did good.
It was also around this time that Zoe began to bring up the idea of having a baby. Wash was reluctant due to the dangerous lives they led, but Zoe was slowly wearing him down.
Personality: When we are first introduced to Wash, he is sitting on the bridge playing with toy dinosaurs. However, as soon as alarms begin going off, he immediately focuses on the task at hand, albeit with a bit of cussing in Chinese. This provides a rather good introduction to a character who is generally a very easy going, somewhat goofy guy who can nonetheless focus quickly when the situation requires it. In particular, when faced with a particularly tricky bit of flying, he becomes almost eerily calm. At least most of the time. (Eventually Alan Tudyk got an Xbox...)
Wash would generally prefer to avoid conflict whenever possible. He's always eager to suggest a solution that doesn't involve violence. He's usually the first to suggest running as an alternative to standing and fighting. That does not, however, mean that he never stands his ground. He has been known to take up a pistol to protect those he cares about. He'd just prefer they explore alternate approaches
before they blow their problems up. He is often a calming influence when debates among the crew get feisty.
Much to Mal's consternation, Wash is incredibly devoted to his wife Zoe. To the point that he was able to resist Saffron's advances despite her considerable training in seduction. Being without her on
Traunquility is likely to make him rather moody. It might even go so far as morose.
While his devotion is admirable, it does on occasion cause tension with Mal. He has, at this point, mostly worked through this conflict, but if faced with a choice between obeying an order and Zoe's well being, you'd better believe there will be some insubordination. He always worries about her when she’s out on the job. Which, considering the nature of their work, is somewhat justified. This tendency to worry does extend well beyond just Zoe to the rest of the crew. He's already worrying, it's not like it's a lot of trouble to worry about some extra people. He is, perhaps, not the best suited to the life the crew leads. With his skills, he could easily go elsewhere. But he is so very in love with Zoe that he'll do all manner of stupid things just to be near her.
Wash is generally a people person. He's not the
most outgoing of the crew (hi Kaylee), but his laid back attitude and ready humour put him right up there. He generally gets along with everyone and tries to make friends. He also would have made an awesome dad if Joss Whedon didn't hate happiness. Ahem.
Related to that, Wash is quite talkative. This only intensifies under stress. He's the sort of person who figures that if he just keeps babbling long enough maybe the solution will come out of his mouth. He tends to think out loud, so sometimes it does. “Just keep talking” has proven to be a fairly effective technique while under Alliance interrogation. Turns out officers don't know how to react to a guy going on about how hot his wife is.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:Wash is an incredibly skilled pilot. He once successfully pulled a Crazy Ivan in a cargo vessel. Serenity essentially dances in his hands. He is also somewhat skilled at basic repairs, often assisting Kaylee in getting the ship up and running again. He is competent enough with a pistol, even if he prefers non-violent approaches when possible. He's also pretty good at carrying.
In terms of weaknesses, Wash is perhaps a bit
too conflict averse. He will stand up if pushed far enough, but he's not quite as eager as some to jump to a cause. Additionally, while he does have an endearing childlike quality, it also comes with a degree of childish petulances. This often manifests in conflicts with Mal, with Wash tending to sulk rather than work the problem out like grownups.
Inventory: - Hawaiian shirt
- Jumpsuit
- 3 plastic dinosaurs
- 1 miniature plastic palm tree
Appearance: Wash is not the most stunning physical specimen, though he does have impressive arms. He is actually taller than Zoe, but as he tends to slouch, he appears to be shorter in most circumstances. He has tousled blond hair and blue eyes. He usually wears obnoxious Hawaiian shirts over his jumpsuits.
Age: 30s

S A M P L E SLog Sample:Most of the crew hated reorganizing the cargo bay. If it weren't for Zoe's tendency to be... very persuasive, it would probably never get done. But Wash didn't really mind. Carrying was one of his very many skills, after all. He'd learned all about it.
The important thing was that it got him out of the cockpit. He loved flying, but his part in jobs generally kept him away from the rest of the crew. So an afternoon spent tossing sacks of foodstuffs up to Kaylee was fine by him. They'd even made a game of it, racing against Jayne and River. Kid could be
scary competitive, but it was good to see her doing something normal. Normal for them, anyway.
One particular member of the crew tended to have a role pretty far from where he was waiting. Which really was a damn shame in his estimation. If he had his way, she'd never be out of his sight.
"Hey, Zoe, could ya grab that cylinder over there?" He pointed to one that had rolled
just the right distance under a shelf.
She shot him a look that said she knew
exactly what he was up to. And then bent over to retrieve the object anyway. And that was why he loved her.
Well, one of many reasons. Right now, he was admiring another one. Two reasons, really. Curving up into a glorious third. Could all count as one, in a way. If you wanted to think of it that way.
Comms Sample: Okay, so we've got pirates. Wouldn't be a ship without them popping up eventually. But I'm going to go out and make a completely
kuangzhe de suggestion here. How 'bout we give talking to them a shot? Before we go right to, well, shooting. They're probably just as eager to get what they came from without a fight. Everyone wins!
[He pauses, considering]Except maybe people itching for target practice. But I reckon there must be a shooting range on here somewhere.
